DJ legends Qbert and Mix Master Mike are without a doubt two of the world’s most well-known and esteemed turntablists. Now, for the modest price of $25, residents of San Francisco can witness the two heavyweights share the same stage at the Independent.
The San Francisco natives are known for their devastatingly original techniques and designs; and for their championship titles and fabled DJ crews. Mix Master Mike and Qbert met a young age and began to perform together, along with their friend DJ Apollo, as the world’s first ever “scratch band.” The band was immensely successful and won the DMC championship in 1992.
The next year Mike and Q-Bert performed as a duo, The Dream Team, and won the DMC again. Finally, 1994 the duo was asked to step away from competition, to encourage others to step up for the title.
After stepping down from DMC competition Mike and Qbert joined with Apollo, D-Styles and Shortkut to form the Invisibl Skratch Piklz, the world’s greatest DJ crew.
The two also achieved massive success as solo artists. Qbert became an innovator in turntable design and a spokesperson for turntablists everywhere. Mike is perhaps best known as the Beastie Boys favorite DJ, including work on their album Hello Nasty. Most recently Mike has released Bangzilla, a thematic battle between himself and his technological counterpart.
The occasion that brought the two friends together again, in their hometown, is the release of painter Justin Bua’s new book The Legends of Hip Hop. Bua will also provide accompanying art and visuals to the performance.
For hip hop connoisseurs and budding turntablists, a chance to see Q-Bert and Mix Master Mike in person is comparable to attending a painting class taught by Pablo Picasso.
